There is a variety of aesthetic options that are popular among adults who want straight teeth, but don’t want others to see their appliances.

Crooked, crowded teeth are more difficult to keep clean and free of tartar and plaque build-up because they provide more tight areas and crevices for food to settle in. When areas are difficult to reach with a toothbrush, that can be a recipe for tooth decay, she said.
When teeth are straight, it helps lessen the potential for bone loss, gum disease and tooth decay.

“These are things that we want to prevent in patients regardless of their age, and you’re never too old to take corrective action,” Eisenhuth said. “For those adults who feel as though braces are just for kids and the opportunity for straight teeth has passed them by, we want them to know that is not the case- we have lots of options for them.”

St. Paul Orthodontist Reminds Parents to Buy New Mouth Guards for Children in Sports

August 2, 2009- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – The St. Paul, MN orthodontics practice of Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth reminds parents to bring in their children’s mouth guards to ensure a proper fit in time for fall sports once they return to school in several weeks.

Students grow every year and last year’s mouth guard may not fit adequately to prevent injury, said Eisenhuth, a St. Paul, MN orthodontist who fits athletes for custom mouth guards at her office.

“Just as children outgrow their cleats and skates, they outgrow their mouth guards as well,” she said. “Ill-fitting mouth guards will not effectively protect your child’s teeth.”

Parents can have custom mouth guards made for their children in two orthodontic visits. At the first appointment, Eisenhuth takes an impression of the mouth to create the mouth guard. A week later, a second appointment is necessary to ensure a proper fit. The mouth guard should be comfortable and the wearer should be able to breathe and speak properly with it in place.

If parents opt to purchase a mouth guard at a sporting goods store, it still is important to bring it in so Eisenhuth can take a look at it and make sure it is thick enough in the appropriate areas and fits snugly so that it protects the teeth adequately, she said.

Mouth guards do more than help prevent tooth injuries. They also work to prevent a concussion in the event the child is hit while playing sports.

Students who participate in any type of contact sport or other sport where they could inadvertently be hit in the mouth should be fitted for a mouth guard, Eisenhuth said. Some examples include karate, lacrosse, football, hockey, soccer and basketball.

Now that school is right around the corner, it’s also a good time for parents to schedule one last orthodontic check-up over the summer, said Eisenhuth, a St. Paul, MN Invisalign provider. Patients who are undergoing Invisalign treatment can pick up their next three sets of aligners to wear, which will give them another six weeks until they must return for a follow-up appointment.

August 2, 2009- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – When a child is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate, repairing the problem means more than a cosmetic improvement.

The condition causes problems with swallowing, eating and breathing in the short term, but can lead to additional problems in a child’s skeletal and dental development that may require orthodontic treatment to correct, said Apple Valley Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, who often treats patients with cleft lip or cleft palate.

What is a Cleft Lip/Palate?
If you touch the roof of your mouth with your tongue, you will feel a “seam” that goes from behind your front teeth to the rear of your mouth. That seam was created when the palate grew together, Eisenhuth said. A cleft palate occurs when the palate fails to grow together properly during development and a gap or split is created.
Similarly, a cleft lip means that there is a split in the upper lip. Children can be born with a split on one or both sides of the lip, which can create a wider opening into the nose. A baby’s lips and palate don’t develop at the same time, so it is possible for a child to be born with either abnormality or both of them, she said.
Cleft lips and cleft palates are common and occur in almost two out of every 1,000 babies born annually in the United States. This can be hereditary or part of a syndrome, but the cause frequently is unknown and therefore unpreventable, according to www.kidshealth.org (http://kidshealth.org/kid/health_problems/birth_defect/cleft_lip_palate.html)
Children born with cleft lip and/or cleft palate often have dental problems with the upper gum or palate. Problems can include crooked, missing, extra or small teeth. These problems may require orthodontic treatment to correct and sometimes can require surgery to obtain optimum results.

Orthodontic Treatment for Cleft Lip/Palate
Some cleft lip/cleft palate treatments begin immediately after birth. There are some pre-surgical orthodontic treatments that can be done during infancy, Eisenhuth said.
If bone grafting is necessary, that typically is done between ages 8 and 10. Treatment to correct the child’s permanent teeth can be addressed after surgery through Phase II orthodontics, including full braces or Invsalign, typically done between ages 12 and 15.
“In cases where orthognathic surgery is required, orthodontic treatment usually begins about nine months prior to the surgery,” Eisenhuth said. “Following the surgery, the braces are maintained for six to eight months to direct the healing.”

This is the second year the Eagan, MN orthodontist has participated in the patriotic festivities.

Last year, Eisenhuth, an Eagan, MN Invisalign specialist, donated items to be passed out to children at the July 4th Funfest.

“This is such a great family and community-oriented event that we wanted to become more involved this year,” Eisenhuth said. “Since most of our patients are children, we thought it fitting to sponsor some children’s activities.”

For the 2009 event held on Saturday, July 4, Eisenhuth came on board as a $1,000 sponsor, according to the Funfest Web site. The sponsorship covers the children’s games, which begin at 12:30 p.m. and are geared toward children of all ages. The games are followed by the Mad Science Lab at 1:30 p.m. and an Underwater Adventures program featuring its mascot Sharky at 2:30 p.m.

“We’re confident that there will be something fun for children of all ages to enjoy at the event,” Eisenhuth said.

The theme of this year’s Funfest is “Summer Under the Stars and Stripes.” The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Yankee Doodle Road and Central Parkway. The carnival, which also features a variety of vendors, begins at noon and ends at midnight.

Community events such as these depend on the generosity of businesses and individuals throughout the community, as they wouldn’t happen without their financial support, said Raleigh Seelig, who has chaired the July 4th Funfest committee for more than 20 years.

This sponsorship shows that Eisenhuth is “willing to help out and be a part of the community and the July 4th event,” Seelig said.

Eagan, MN Orthodontist Promotes Alignment for a Lifetime

July 11, 2009- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Like braces, orthodontic retainers have been considered a rite of passage into adulthood for many teenagers- worn for a short time as the final step in the teeth alignment process.

But increasingly, orthodontists are encouraging patients to hang onto those retainers and wear them a bit longer- forever, even.

That’s right. As the science of orthodontics continues to evolve, research on the aging process as it relates to teeth alignment has shown that teeth shifting- even after braces- is a part of life, said Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, an Eagan, MN orthodontist.

“This isn’t a case of pointing the finger at patients and telling them that they didn’t follow their orthodontist’s instructions,” Eisenhuth said. “Orthodontists have done a complete about-face when it comes to instructing patients on retainer use.”

Eisenhuth used to recommend that patients wear their retainers for up to two years before weaning them off the appliance, but now she counsels them on the notion that a retainer is a maintenance appliance that likely will need to be worn a few times a week for the rest of their lives.

“As an orthodontist, I understand that this may not be something patients want to hear,” Eisenhuth said. “Truth be told, a patient’s teeth could shift ever so slightly and perhaps it wouldn’t bother them a bit. But to maintain the perfect alignment we have achieved at the time braces are removed, wearing a retainer periodically from now on will be a necessity for many patients.”

In addition to teeth shifting being part of the aging process, teeth sometimes have a tendency to shift back into their former positioning after braces are removed, Eisenhuth said, although they typically never return to the exact position they were in prior to braces.

It is important to note that a retainer typically does not shift teeth back into place, she said. It simply maintains straight teeth. Routine retainer use can keep shifting to a minimum.

“The longer a patient leaves the retainer out, the more likely it is that their teeth will shift,” Eisenhuth said, adding that the tightness some patients feel when putting in a retainer after they went without wearing it for several days is evidence that the teeth have shifted slightly.

Teeth may become sore once a retainer is worn after several days of nonuse, but wearing it on a regular basis will eliminate the discomfort.

Eisenhuth recommends that patients wear their retainers at night at least several nights a week.

“It’s understandable that once patients have their braces off, they aren’t eager to be seen with metal in their mouths anymore,” she said. “So wearing the retainer while you sleep is a good idea. It gets the job done and preserves a perfect smile.”

As an Eagan, Minnesota Invisalign provider, Eisenhuth recommends that patients who opt for Invisalign treatment- a series of custom made, clear plastic aligners that gradually reposition teeth into proper alignment- hang onto their final aligner and wear that periodically as a means of keeping their teeth straight.

Eagan Orthodontics Practice Sponsors Children’s Activities At Eagan Art Festival

Tuesday, June 2, 2009- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, who runs an Eagan, MN orthodontics practice, will sponsor the children’s activities tent at the Eagan Art Festival June 27-28.

This is the third year Eisenhuth has sponsored the activities tent.

“This is a wonderful event that doesn’t cost anything for the children,” said Eisenhuth, an Eagan braces expert. “In the past, they have had the opportunity to make kites and design T-shirts, and I think the kids will enjoy what is in store for them this year.”

The focus for this year’s activity is on kinetic art, which is art that moves, said Wanda Bornan, manager of the Eagan Art Festival.

Bornan works with the Eagan Art House for the children’s activities and this year, children will create mobiles at the children’s activity tent, she said. Some mobiles will be made with recycled materials. The activity is geared so that it is accessible to children of all ages. A more simplified version of the project will be presented to preschool-aged children, while school-aged students will make more complex pieces.

“We like to be involved in activities such as this because we really enjoy giving back to the community,” Eisenhuth said. “As an orthodontist, we have a lot of contact with local children and we work hard to make our office an exciting place for them. But we also feel that it is important to help the local community provide exciting opportunities for children as well.”

The Eagan Art Festival is in its 15th year. It will be held from 9 a.m. To 5 p.m. on June 27 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 28. The festival is held on the Eagan Community Festival Grounds at 1501 Central Parkway. It is a free event that features artisans, entertainment, food and art activities for children and adults.

Apple Valley, Minnesota Orthodontist Treats Impacted Teeth

Monday, May 31, 2009- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – In a perfect world of dealing with imperfect teeth, an orthodontist can place braces on the teeth and achieve proper alignment for patients over the course of treatment.

But sometimes, straightening teeth isn’t so simple; particularly in the case of impacted teeth, said Apple Valley Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth.

Eisenhuth occasionally treats patients with impacted teeth at her Apple Valley, Minnesota orthodontics practice and she thinks “it’s amazing what can be done to correct this problem,” she said.

Tooth impaction occurs when a tooth cannot erupt because it is blocked by another tooth, bone or soft tissue. It is important that impacted teeth be treated because without treatment, they can cause future dental problems, Eisenhuth said. As impacted teeth attempt to erupt, they can press against the teeth or bone that are blocking them and cause jaw pain.

Impacted canine teeth in particular can cause a host of problems.

“Canines can erupt into an unfavorable position, sometimes even causing an adult tooth to fall out,” Eisenhuth said.

Impacted teeth also can create unwanted spaces in the mouth, damage the roots of nearby teeth, lead the teeth to function improperly or adversely impact the sinus cavity.

There are several methods of addressing impacted teeth:

•Expanders- used to create needed space for the tooth to improve its eruption path.

•Open forced eruption- patient is referred to an oral surgeon, who will uncover the impacted tooth by creating a flap and leaving an area to place a button or bracket on it.

•Closed Forced Eruption- similar to open forced eruption, but the flap is closed once the button or braces are placed on the impacted tooth.

•Extraction- tooth is removed and any space left in the area can be treated by placing a dental implant or by closing the space via orthodontic methods.

•Surgical Repositioning- helpful in cases where impacted teeth have proven otherwise difficult to treat, this method involves carefully repositioning the tooth, which often is growing in the wrong direction and placing it in a semi-erupted position to provide the best chance for it to grow into place properly.

This is the second article the Eagan braces expert has written for the monthly publication, which is dedicated to consumer advocacy. The publication is written primarily by doctors and other healthcare professionals in an effort to educate readers on popular health-related topics.

The article written by Eisenhuth discusses the benefits and importance of early orthodontic- also referred to as Phase 1- treatment, said Eisenhuth, an Eagan Invisalign provider.

“This is a topic that I’m passionate about, and it’s important to me that parents are educated on Phase 1 treatment,” she said. “Early treatment can correct problems that could only be corrected with surgery down the road if left untreated. Parents need to know about these options.”

Phase 1 orthodontics refers to steps taken to correct poor oral habits and some malocclusion issues in children before all of their permanent teeth have grown in. Treating children when they are young creates a window of opportunity to correct some problems that is impossible without surgery once a child is about 8 years old. Minnesota Orthodontist Touts Benefits of Self-Ligating Brackets

May 7, 2009- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – It seems that we live in a society where our physical appearance means everything and we want instant results when it comes to correcting flaws.

While few options deliver immediate results, technology continues to address this demand for fast-acting products when it comes to the orthodontic field, said Minnesota Invisalign expert Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth.

Eisenhuth introduced self-ligating brackets to her practice about five years ago and Clarity SL self-ligating brackets nearly two years ago. Patients who choose that option are happy with the speed in which treatment can be completed, she said. The brackets also are made from a translucent ceramic, which makes them less noticeable. This option appeals to patients who want others to notice their smiles, not their braces.

“Patients can typically expect to complete their treatment in 14 to 18 months,” said the Minneapolis, Minnesota orthodontist.

They also require fewer appointments. Patients typically come in for an adjustment once every two to three months.

Traditional braces typically are worn for 18 to 24 months and need to be adjusted by the orthodontist every four to six weeks. At each appointment, the archwire and the rubber bands that hold the archwire in place must be replaced.

Self-ligating brackets such as Clarity SL are equipped with a mechanism that clips onto the archwire and eliminates the need for rubber bands to hold the wires in place. This set-up also allows the archwire to slide more freely through such brackets, which makes tooth movement easier during the alignment process.

“In my opinion, the biggest advantage to these brackets is the low friction combined with an aesthetic bracket,” Eisenhuth said.

Low friction brackets are especially useful in patients who require tooth removal for ideal correction. Patients whose mouths are overly crowded or who didn’t undergo Phase 1 treatment as children sometimes must have teeth removed to make permanent alignment more successful, she said.

Self-ligating brackets also are useful for patients who require a large correction of the bite. This is because the teeth move more quickly using the self-ligating bracket system, while elastics work more quickly in lower friction systems, Eisenhuth said.

Adults with a crowded mouth and are undergoing orthodontic treatment with traditional brackets can be in treatment as long as 30 months, she said. However, the Clarity SL lower friction system can finish the case in closer to 24 months.

They recently completed in-house courses by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration course on infection control, the Center for Disease Control course on preventing cross contamination and a seminar on patient education, which was held in San Diego last month.

Eisenhuth and members of her staff at her St. Paul, MN orthodontics practice participate in events such as this several times per year because they not only want to continue learning about how to provide the best in orthodontics, they also strive to improve in other areas of the practice.

The OSHA course is required every two years, but Eisenhuth schedules them annually, she said.

“We address infection control because it’s very important and our staff needs to constantly be aware of our policies and what to do in the event of an incident,” said the MN braces expert. “We want to make sure everyone in the office is on the same page.”

OSHA regulations are frequently updated, so participating in the continuing education opportunities ensures staff is kept up to speed with the latest regulations and practices.

The CDC cross-contamination prevention course addressed personal protection, such as the use of gloves, proper uniforms, eye protection and the importance of cleaning and disinfecting equipment and appliances, Eisenhuth said.

The San Diego course on patient education gave staff an opportunity to learn to better educate patients.

“That is important to us,” Eisenhuth said. “The more informed patients are, the easier it is for them to make sound decisions.”

Continuing education in this area helps ensure Eisenhuth and her staff are able to educate patients at the highest level to make an informed decision when determining the level of orthodontics that would best benefit them.

Education goes beyond assisting potential patients in making an initial decision on orthodontic treatment. Focusing on maintaining open lines of communication also is important because it reduces the level of prospective problems that can occur during treatment, she said.

“It’s our job to strive to do the best we can in providing an ongoing dialog regarding treatment and care for patients with braces,” she said. “We need to make sure they understand the importance of cleaning their braces, flossing and using the Sonicare toothbrush we provide for them.”

These healthy oral hygiene routines can prevent the negative impacts of not taking care of the teeth.

Minnesota Orthodontics Expert Teams Up With Speech Specialist to Correct Impediments

Tuesday, March 3, 2009- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Orthodontists have made the case for years about the importance of early orthodontic evaluations for children.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive an orthodontic evaluation by age 7, and the reasons are more than just cosmetic. Many problems children develop that may lead to speech impediments can be corrected through early orthodontic treatment.

Minnesota orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth has worked closely with speech therapists to correct speech impediments in young patients with tongue thrust.

Tongue thrust occurs when the tongue contacts more than half the surface area of either the upper or lower front teeth while in a resting position, according to the Center for Speech and Language Pathology’s Web site (http://www.speechtherapyct.com/glossary.htm).

All children are born with a tongue thrust swallow pattern, Eisenhuth said. This occurs when an infant with no teeth brings his/her tongue forward to create a seal between the gums to enable food and milk to go back in the mouth and be swallowed.

A natural transition typically occurs by the time a child reaches age 7 and the child begins placing the tongue on the roof of the mouth when swallowing. If this transition doesn’t occur and the child continues placing the tongue between the teeth while swallowing, the muscles around the teeth and lips continue to be used in the swallowing pattern instead of the throat muscles.

When children continue swallowing in the same manner as when they lacked teeth, it creates a block for the teeth to erupt and often causes them to develop an open bite. An open bite prevents the teeth from touching. If the condition is not caught early enough, the tongue thrust also can affect skeletal development, creating a dental and a skeletal open bite, which is even more difficult to correct, Eisenhuth said. Sometimes a combination of orthodontics and surgery is required to correct this particular form of open bite.

Even if they don’t require corrective surgery, open bites often still require a combination of treatment, typically from an orthodontist and a speech therapist to permanently correct the problem, Eisenhuth said.

“Open bites are difficult to correct, and if the tongue thrust pattern isn't caught and changed by working with a speech therapist, any orthodontic correction of the bite will likely return,” she said.

That is why the two professions must work together. Orthodontists fix the bite and speech therapists work to correct the swallow pattern.

Tongue thrust frequently is initially diagnosed by an orthodontist or the family dentist who notices that the teeth are positioned irregularly. Eisenhuth evaluates the swallow pattern of each patient she sees to determine whether tongue thrust exists. If she detects the abnormal swallow pattern, she refers them to a speech therapist.

“Along with that specialist, we improve the swallow and the occlusion,” she said. “Typically, if caught before age 8, together we can create a normal bite within one year of detection.”

A speech therapist works with the child by providing “exercises for the lips, tongue and jaw that are designed to change an incorrect or immature swallow to an adult pattern that is beneficial to the positioning of teeth and to correct articulation of speech sounds,” according to the Hearing, Speech and Deafness Center Web site, (http://www.hsdc.org/Child/Speech/tonguethrust.htm ). The condition usually can be corrected in three to six months.

For the past 13 years, Eisenhuth and her staff have visited various organizations and schools to talk about the importance of oral health. This year, she and her staff will give away toothbrushes, dental floss and toothpaste and will focus on several topics that promote good oral hygiene, including:

· Teeth brushing techniques- It takes two minutes to properly brush using short, gentle strokes and devoting extra attention to the gumline, areas around fillings and hard-to-reach areas such as the back teeth. Don’t forget to brush your tongue. Electric and sonic toothbrushes are great to use, too.

· Flossing- hold the floss snugly between thumbs and index finger and insert it between each of the teeth, making sure to go beneath the gumline and curving the floss around the base of each tooth.

· Carbonated, sugary drinks- these drinks create acids that can damage the teeth when mixed with saliva, so they should be avoided. If you’re going to drink one of these drinks, don’t sip on it throughout the day; drink it and then brush your teeth.

· Snack wisely- choose healthy snacks such as cheese, fruits and vegetables and avoid sticky, chewy candies that can stick to the teeth. If you eat these snacks, be sure to brush after doing so.

· Avoid tobacco products- children should avoid peer pressure to try tobacco products for various health reasons, but tobacco use can be detrimental to oral health, too.

· Routine dental visits- you should go to the dentist for professional check-ups and teeth cleaning appointments about every six months.

National Children’s Dental Health Month is in its 60th year. The American Dental Association has spent every February since 1949 working to increase awareness about the importance of oral health. NCDHM messages and materials have reached millions of people in communities across the country since then, according to the ADA Web site (http://www.ada.org/prof/events/featured/ncdhm.asp#general).

“It’s important for children to develop healthy habits at an early age to set the stage for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums,” Eisenhuth said. “National Children’s Dental Health Month is a great opportunity for us to help make that happen.”

Minneapolis, MN Orthodontics Specialist Uses Invisalign in Case Where Traditional Braces Aren’t an Option

But when a patient presented recently with compromised enamel due to a congenital defect in the formation of the teeth, Eisenhuth had to take a different approach to correcting the alignment issues.

For the first time, Eisenhuth used Invisalign Teen. This fairly new Invisalign product was introduced in July by Align Technology, Inc. It was designed to address the specific needs of teenagers seeking orthodontic treatment. For example, the aligners possess features that address the natural eruption of second molars and root control issues common in teenage patients.

Other than that, Invisalign Teen operates in the same fashion as the traditional Invisalign system. It includes a series of clear plastic aligners custom-designed to address the needs of each individual patient. Patients wear each set of aligners for approximately two weeks at a time until the teeth have reached their intended position.

What makes Invisalign Teen slightly different from its parent product is its compliance indicator. The aligners come equipped with a small blue dot that fades with wear. The more patients wear their aligners, the quicker the blue dot disappears.

“The Invisalign trays only work if they are being worn as recommended,” Eisenhuth said. “They don't work when they sit in their case, so the patient has to be committed to wearing the trays as directed to achieve an optimal result.”

Invisalign Teen is a great product for this specific patient, she said, adding, “It was the perfect answer because nothing will be bonded to the enamel, yet we will improve alignment and occlusion with this product.”

Advancements in orthodontics have made it possible to correct many problems early on, often eliminating the need for surgery in some cases and reducing future orthodontic treatment time in others.

By age 7, most children have a mixture of baby and adult teeth. At that time, several common orthodontic problems can be detected, according to the American Association of Orthodontics. One early intervention product Eisenhuth uses in her practice to prevent permanent tooth extraction in patients when they’re older is the Carriere Distilizer, manufactured by Class One Orthodontics.

This device corrects overjet, which is when the patient’s bite is a full tooth ahead.

“This is a great device to start addressing this issue before putting braces on the patient,” Eisenhuth said. “This is about a four-month process that can decrease the time the patient is in braces and can completely take them out of the extraction category.”

If a patient is past his or her growth spurt, there’s not a lot an orthodontist can do to correct the situation. That is why interceptive treatment is so beneficial. In extreme cases, it can actually prevent surgery.

The priority, provided it doesn’t negatively impact the profile of the patient, is to preserve and maintain all of the permanent teeth, Eisenhuth.

St. Paul Orthodontist Uses New Anchoring System To Prevent Surgery

November 20, 2008- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – St. Paul Invisalign Specialist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth is using an anchoring system on patients that prevents the need for surgery in many cases.

Temporary anchoring devices include a complete line of miniscrews, attachments and instruments designed to make temporary anchorage easy, intuitive and effective.

Also known as microimplant screws, Eisenhuth has included them in orthodontic treatment since 2006. These tiny devices provide more strength and stability than many traditional anchoring methods, according to the Ormco Web site (http://ormco.com/index/ormco-products-vector) . Ormco manufactures one type of microimplants.

Microimplants are a relatively new technique, but orthodontists appear to be increasingly willing to use them in their practices because of the excellent results they are achieving, Eisenhuth said.

“These devices allow an orthodontist to get more angles and forces to help move the teeth to treat a wide variety of problems,” Eisenhuth said. “It also can reduce or eliminate the need for a patient to wear head gear in many cases, and it shortens treatment time.”

The microimplants are most useful at providing an orthodontist with an anchor- and the ability to move teeth in one direction without counter-movement, she said.

In the past, orthodontists relied heavily on the molars to serve as anchors when attempting to shift the teeth into proper alignment, Eisenhuth said. This was used especially in cases where the orthodontist needed to pull in a patient’s front teeth that were severely protruded.

Today, Eisenhuth can place microimplants on each side of the jaw in the back and attach elastics to the teeth she wants to move back, she said.

Microimplants are very small- roughly no wider than half the width of a person’s thumbnail and about as big around as the head of a pin.

Placing small screws into the jaw may sound painful, but it can be done relatively painlessly by an oral surgeon or by using the MadaJet Needle-free anesthetic. MadaJet is a virtually pain-free anesthetic device.

The microimplant screw is removed when orthodontic treatment is completed. It takes less than a minute to remove it and causes no pain, Eisenhuth said.

Minneapolis Orthodontics Practice Ships Halloween Candy To U.S. Troops

MN Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth shipped 850 pounds of candy to U.S. troops serving in Iraq.

This is the fourth year Eisenhuth has sponsored a candy buy-back program in which patients were asked to turn in candy that might harm their braces and exchange it for tokens they could redeem for other prizes.

Eisenhuth shipped toothpaste, toothbrushes and dental floss along with the candy to four units serving in Iraq.

In addition to her patients, the community got involved after learning about Eisenhuth’s buy-back program through media coverage she received in local newspapers and on Fox 9 News.

Many donors turned down the tokens they were offered, saying they simply wanted to donate to a good cause, Eisenhuth said.

“Our patients broke the record this year,” she said. Last year, the practice collected more than 600 pounds of candy.

Eisenhuth was surprised to learn that many of the soldiers who received the candy and oral hygiene items last year gave them away to Iraqi children.

“It was so rewarding to learn that we gave our military personnel these items to cheer them up and they shared them with Iraqi children to help establish good will,” she said.

Minneapolis Orthodontist Offers Halloween Candy Buy-Back Program

October 10, 2008- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Halloween can be a tough time for MN Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth.

Kids go trick-or treating and come home with loads of chewy, sticky candies. Days later, they come in for check-ups with bent wires or broken appliances caused by eating those candies.

Four years ago, Eisenhuth decided to strike a deal with her young patients- exchange those candies that wreak havoc on braces for other treats instead. She created a candy buy-back program in which patients received tokens for every pound of candy they turned in. The tokens then could be cashed in for other treats, such as gift cards to Target and other stores, iPods and Webkins.

The candy buy-back program quickly became an overwhelming success, Eisenhuth said, partly because the patients knew that all of the relinquished candy would be shipped- along with toothbrushes- to U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq.

Eisenhuth and her staff first decided to send the donated candy to soldiers because one of her employees who served in the National Guard at the time had been deployed to Iraq. It is a tradition that continued after she returned, due to the patients’ enthusiasm for the program and the gratitude expressed by the soldiers who received the treats.

“We have thank-you notes on display in the office from the soldiers who received the candy last year,” Eisenhuth said. “One of them mentioned that they handed out the candy and toothbrushes to local children in Iraq, who were very appreciative of friendly American soldiers.”

Last year, patients turned in more than 600 pounds of candy. Eisenhuth is hopeful the program will be as successful this year.

“Our patients have been incredibly generous in donating their candy,” she said. “They are happy to give away some of it to bring a little bit of America to our troops abroad.”

The goal was to get patients to donate caramels, taffy and other candies that could damage braces, but Eisenhuth has found that many patients even donate the candy that isn’t off-limits to braces wearers.

“I think that speaks volumes about the generosity of these young patients,” she said.

Reasons To Say No To Some Candies
Besides the fact that the donated candy goes to a good cause, there are important orthodontic reasons to avoid sticky, chewy candies, Eisenhuth said.

“We know time is valuable and we want to minimize the number of visits our patients and parents have to make to our office,” she said. “We also want to do everything we can to make sure our patients finish their treatment on time.”

When patients eat sticky or chewy candies that damage or break their appliances, it can throw the treatment schedule off.

If a bracket gets loose, the tooth it was attached to tends to relapse by gently sliding back into its original position.

“A lot of times, kids don’t tell their parents they popped a bracket because they don’t want to get in trouble,” Eisenhuth said. “When we catch the problem three or four weeks later and relapse has occurred, now we need a longer appointment because we have to do some repair and overall treatment time is extended because we have to play catch-up with the relapsed tooth.”

While many dentists advise patients to steer away from sweets altogether for oral health reasons, it’s no secret that people still are going to indulge occasionally.

“Just be smart about it,” Eisenhuth said. “Brush your teeth after eating sweets.”

The truth is that some dental issues are more easily corrected when children are younger, said Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth. Eisenhuth discusses the importance of early intervention on her Web site: www.doctorjennifer.com.

“Addressing problems early has the potential to lessen the amount of time children spend in orthodontic treatment later,” Eisenhuth said.

Sometimes braces are needed due to genetic reasons. Many orthodontic problems such as jaw and tooth size, overbites, under bites, extra or missing teeth and jaw discrepancies may lead to teeth spacing and crowding issues down the road. These are inherited problems that can’t be prevented, she said. Other times, orthodontic problems are caused by accidents or dental disease.

Orthodontic issues also can be the result of children’s poor mouth habits. Thumb sucking, using a pacifier, breathing through the mouth and tongue thrusting all are problems that can be corrected through early childhood orthodontic intervention.

Thumb-Sucking
Sucking the thumb, fingers or a pacifier beyond age four or five can result in deformation of localized teeth and supporting bone. This is because by age four or five, a child’s permanent are preparing to erupt.

Prolonged thumb-sucking also can cause the upper teeth to stick out as they erupt. It can make the lower teeth become crooked and can create a narrow upper palate.

Mouth Breathing
It may sound strange, but children who breathe excessively through their mouths can cause serious problems in their cranio-facial development that could lead to the need for jaw surgery if left untreated for a long time. Mouth breathing also can lead to serious malocclusions.

“There is a direct relationship between the degree of mouth breathing and the severity of malocclusion in many patients,” Eisenhuth said. “Additionally, there are multiple other health issues associated with incorrect breathing.”

Getting orthodontic treatment while children still are young has made correcting these issues easier and has eliminated the need for surgery in many cases, she said.

Tongue Thrusting

When a child pushes her tongue against the back of the teeth during swallowing and creates abnormal swallowing patterns, this is referred to as tongue thrusting. It also involves the improper resting of the tongue. These bad habits can force teeth out of alignment, Eisenhuth said.

Monday, Sept. 8, 2008- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Minneapolis Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth will use National Orthodontic Health Month to kick-off her goal of speaking to 5,000 elementary and middle school students this school year about oral hygiene.

National Orthodontic Health Month is observed every October.

Eisenhuth and her staff bring toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss to the students and share information on how to brush and floss properly, among other oral hygiene topics.

“Our biggest push is to educate the students, especially at this age, because if these topics aren’t revisited regularly,” Eisenhuth said, “it’s difficult for students to stay up to speed on how best to care for their teeth to ensure they keep them for a lifetime.”

The most popular element of the presentation tends to be when the students are shown what soft drinks and energy drinks do to teeth over time.

Teeth are left to soak for about three weeks in various drinks, including Coca Cola, Mountain Dew and Gatorade, and the students get to see what that does to the teeth. They see how the root changes color- even turning black in some cases- and the enamel begins to fall off.

“They think it’s disgusting,” Eisenhuth said. “It’s awe-inspiring, in the sense that it gets their attention.”

Also in October, Eisenhuth will provide information to parents on the importance of taking their children to an orthodontist at age 7. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have a consultation with an orthodontist this early because some problems can be corrected more easily when caught early.

In extreme cases, older children who visit the orthodontist for the first time can be on a surgery path, whereas had they received treatment earlier, serious malocclusion issues could have been corrected with expanders or head gear to prevent surgery or permanent tooth extractions.

The Process
Getting these technological marvels begins with an orthodontic consultation to determine whether the patient is a good candidate.

Once the determination has been made, the process begins with the orthodontist taking an impression of the patient’s teeth. That impression is taken to a computer, where it is scanned and developed into a 3-D model of the teeth.

From that model, a Lingualcare lab technician creates the customized brackets- along with archwires bent by a robot specifically for that patient- and sends the appliances back to the orthodontist. The archwires are heavier than an orthodontist can effectively bend manually. Using the robot to bend the wires mechanically is another reason the overall treatment tends to be quicker, Eisenhuth said.
